The evaluation of the antioxidant activity of ethanolic leaf extract of Psidium guajava: a preliminary study toward its potential antidiabetic properties.
Abstract
This study investigates the antioxidant potential of the ethanolic leaf extract of Psidium guajava L. (guava), a medicinal plant traditionally used to manage metabolic conditions such as diabetes. Guava leaves were extracted using ethanol through cold maceration, and their antioxidant activity and total phenolic content were evaluated using the DPPH radical scavenging assay and Folin-Ciocalteu method, respectively. The extract demonstrated dose-dependent antioxidant activity, with higher concentrations producing greater radical-scavenging effects, while the high linearity of the gallic acid standard curve (R² = 0.9934) confirmed the reliability of the phenolic content analysis. The findings indicate that guava leaf extract has notable antioxidant properties associated with its rich phenolic content, supporting its traditional medicinal use and warranting further investigation into its potential antidiabetic effects.
