<description>Water bankruptcy in the 21st century: climate pressure, groundwater and surface water depletion and the macroeconomics of water scarcity in northwest Bangladesh
Duti, Bushra Monowar
This thesis examines the emergence of water bankruptcy in northwest Bangladesh, particularly the High Barind Tract, by analysing climate change, groundwater depletion, declining Teesta River flows, irrigation, energy use, agriculture, governance, and economic costs as an interconnected system. The findings show rising dry-season water demand, severe groundwater decline, weakening aquifer recovery, and an approximately three-quarter reduction in Teesta River flow from the 1979 baseline, increasing dependence on groundwater and energy for irrigation. The study estimates substantial annual economic losses from water scarcity and argues that continued depletion will become increasingly costly. It proposes the Basin Bankruptcy-Adjusted Allocation (BBAA) framework and recommends managed aquifer recharge, ecological-flow protection, demand management, drought-tolerant agriculture, improved monitoring, transboundary cooperation, and climate financing to address water scarcity and prevent further depletion.

<title>Investigating the nexus between economic growth and remittance, trade openness, and investment</title>

<description>Investigating the nexus between economic growth and remittance, trade openness, and investment
Rahman, Md Hasibur
This study examines the relationship between remittances and GDP per capita growth using the ARDL bounds testing approach, with trade openness and investment as control variables. The findings confirm a long-run cointegrating relationship among the variables, with an error correction term of −0.916, indicating a 92% annual speed of adjustment. Investment is statistically significant in both the short and long run, while trade openness is significant only in its contemporaneous short-run form. Remittances, however, have no statistically significant impact on GDP per capita growth in either the short run or the long run.

<title>Investigating the link between the theory of consumer purchase intention and the consumers' spending capacity: a study on the tourism sector of Bangladesh.</title>

<description>Investigating the link between the theory of consumer purchase intention and the consumers' spending capacity: a study on the tourism sector of Bangladesh.
Hadi, Kazi Shawon
This study examines the relationship between consumer purchase intention and spending capacity in Bangladesh’s domestic tourism sector. Data were collected from 330 domestic tourists using a structured questionnaire and analyzed through several statistical methods, including factor analysis, OLS, and GLM regression.&#13;
The findings show that destination preference, destination satisfaction, purchasing power, and previous visit experience significantly affect tourists’ total expenditure. Tourists with higher education, older age, and higher income also tend to spend more on trips. The study suggests that improving tourism infrastructure, destination quality, facilities, and marketing strategies could help increase domestic tourist spending. Overall, the research connects consumer behavioral factors with economic spending behavior in Bangladesh’s emerging tourism market.
This thesis is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science (MSc) in Economics program, 2026.

<title>Impact of Loan Default on the Sustainability of Financial Health: A Study on Selected Private Commercial Banks in Bangladesh</title>

<description>Impact of Loan Default on the Sustainability of Financial Health: A Study on Selected Private Commercial Banks in Bangladesh
Barua, Senjuti; Ayetha, Thein
This study aims to examine the influence of loan&#13;
default over the sustainability of financial health of selected&#13;
private commercial banks listed on Dhaka Stock Exchange&#13;
(DSE) in Bangladesh. The banking sector of the country faces&#13;
significant challenges in terms of loan defaults. The study&#13;
applies panel data analysis to investigate how non-performing&#13;
loan ratio (NPLR), capital adequacy ratio (CAR), provision&#13;
maintenance ratio (PMR), credit deposit ratio (CDR), and&#13;
cost-to-income ratio (CIR) influence the sustainability of bank&#13;
performance, as measured by a profitability indicator- return&#13;
on assets (ROA). The study utilizes secondary data of 19&#13;
private commercial banks over a 16-year period (2008-2023),&#13;
representing strongly balanced panel data. Hausman&#13;
specification test recommends fixed effect regression model&#13;
which reveals that NPLR has a significant negative influence&#13;
over ROA, whereas CDR shows a significant positive impact.&#13;
This study provides valuable insights for bank management in&#13;
Bangladesh to better manage non-performing loans and&#13;
optimize credit strategies to maintain profitability.&#13;
Keywords - Credit deposit ratio, fixed effect regression, nonperforming&#13;
loan ratio, profitability
