The Effect of Continuous Improvement on Waste Elimination for Implementing Lean Manufacturing in the Apparel Industry of Bangladesh
Bashar, Abul; Hasin, Ahsan Akhtar
Lean Manufacturing (LM) is an advanced manufacturing philosophy used for the improvement of organizational performance in a competitive business environment. The primary objective of lean manufacturing is to eliminate the waste (non-value added activities) from the production processes. Lean manufacturing consists of several lean parameters such as top management commitment, people management, process management, just-in-time production, total quality management, total productive maintenance and continuous improvement. The impacts of each of the lean parameters on the organizational performance need to be verified. This paper addresses the effect of continuous improvement as a lean parameter on the waste elimination in the apparel industry of Bangladesh.

This is a quantitative study and data was collected through a structured questionnaire survey. Out of 120 respondents, 105 responded. Findings of the study support the hypotheses and present the relationship between trust, team expertise and empowerment and organizational learning strategy. Several guidelines and practical implications can be made from this study and further research can be initiated for general conclusion.

The Strategic Interplay Among Work Life Balance, Age, Employee Experience and Employee Retention: Evidence from the Pharmaceutical Industry of Bangladesh

The Strategic Interplay Among Work Life Balance, Age, Employee Experience and Employee Retention: Evidence from the Pharmaceutical Industry of Bangladesh
Ahsan, Ramjanul; Hossain, Md. Sajjad; Akter, Silvia
This study takes a simplistic approach to understand the interplay between work life balance, age and employee retention while looking at the moderating effect of employees’ job experience in Bangladesh context. Quantitative analysis has been carried out using SPSS on the complete data of233 respondents (employees) from the pharmaceutical industry of Bangladesh. The results show that young employees place more importance on work life balance whereas senior employees are comparatively less sensitive towards work life balance issue. Moreover, job experience of employees is moderating the basic work life balance and employee retention relationship. This phenomenon is taking place probably due to the deep rooted employee loyalty and affective & continuance employee commitment towards the organization which is well explained by the social exchange theory. Interestingly, there is no significant result variation once the analysis has been carried out for the women respondents separately. It, perhaps, strengthens the fact that work life balance is important to both male and female group of employees in Bangladesh context. However, the data represents the pharmaceutical industry of Bangladesh only and hence generalization is subject to questions. Hence, scope for future research remains strong for broader generalizability.
